Your Complete Guide to RF Microneedling
*By Lil, Registered Nurse & Co Founder of Aphelia Aesthetics *
If you've started noticing that your skin doesn't quite look or feel the way it once did, you're certainly not alone.
Whether it's fine lines appearing around the eyes, skin feeling less firm, acne scarring that never quite faded, or simply a complexion that looks a little tired and dull, these are all common concerns I discuss with clients every day at Aphelia Aesthetics.
One treatment that has transformed the way we approach skin rejuvenation is RF Microneedling.
As a Registered Nurse, I am passionate about treatments that work with your body's natural processes rather than against them. RF Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments available for stimulating collagen production, improving skin quality, and restoring a healthier, more youthful appearance without surgery.
In this guide, I'll explain exactly what RF Microneedling is, how it works, who it's suitable for, and what you can realistically expect from treatment.
What Is RF Microneedling?
RF Microneedling combines two powerful skin rejuvenation technologies into a single treatment:
Microneedling
Radio Frequency (RF) Energy
Tiny sterile needles create controlled micro-channels within the skin while simultaneously delivering radio frequency energy into the deeper layers.
This combination stimulates your body's natural healing response, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin, the essential building blocks responsible for firm, smooth, youthful-looking skin.
The result is healthier, stronger skin that continues to improve over the weeks and months following treatment.
What Can RF Microneedling Treat?
One of the reasons I love RF Microneedling is its versatility.
It can be used to improve a wide range of skin concerns, including:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Skin laxity and loss of firmness
Acne scarring
Enlarged pores
Uneven skin texture
Sun damage
Pigmentation concerns
Stretch marks
General skin ageing
Dull or tired-looking skin
Because the treatment works by stimulating your body's own regenerative processes, results often look incredibly natural.
Rather than looking "done", clients simply look fresher, healthier, and more confident.
How Does RF Microneedling Work?
As we age, our natural collagen production gradually slows down.
Collagen is responsible for keeping our skin firm, plump, and resilient. Unfortunately, from our mid-twenties onwards, we begin producing less of it each year.
RF Microneedling helps reverse this process.
The treatment creates controlled micro-injuries within the skin whilst delivering heat precisely into the deeper tissue layers. This stimulates fibroblast activity, triggering the production of fresh collagen and elastin.
Over time, the skin becomes:
Firmer
Smoother
More refined
Better textured
More radiant
Many clients notice an initial glow within a few weeks, with continued improvements developing over the following three to six months.
Is RF Microneedling Painful?
This is probably one of the most common questions I get asked.
The good news is that most clients find the treatment very manageable.
Before treatment, a medical-grade topical numbing cream is applied to maximise comfort. You may feel some warmth and pressure during the procedure, but most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable it is.
Afterwards, your skin may appear red, similar to mild sunburn, for 24 to 48 hours.
Most clients return to normal daily activities very quickly.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This depends on your skin concerns and goals.
For general skin rejuvenation and collagen stimulation, I typically recommend a course of three treatments spaced approximately four to six weeks apart.
For more advanced concerns such as acne scarring or significant skin laxity, additional sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal results.
During your consultation, I will assess your skin thoroughly and create a bespoke treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
